Woman jailed for attempt to smuggle drugs into HMP Hewell

7:40am Wednesday 8th February 2012

A WOMAN who tried to smuggle heroin into Hewell prison near Redditch has been jailed for two years at Worcester Crown Court.

Five years ago, Victoria Smith was foiled trying to get heroin into Winson Green prison in Birmingham and was sentenced to 12 months custody.

Smith, aged 28, of Westgate Close, Sedgley, Dudley, pleaded guilty to possession of heroin, diazapan and another class B drug with intent to supply.

She was caught in the visitors' room at Hewell on May 17 last year with the packaged drugs tucked into her waistband, said Peter Grice, prosecuting.

The drugs were intended for her boyfriend who was serving a 10-year sentence for a serious crime, which was not specified in court.

Defence counsel Tim Talbot-Webb said she was on medication for depression and had attempted suicide.

Recorder Michael Morse pointed out that drugs were "contraband currency" in jails and maintained prisoners' drug habits, encouraging more crime on their release.
